Laid-back and welcoming A review of Maui Guest House
I agree with the previous reviewer. The building is nicely laid out and everything is wonderfully clean. This is a well-run place, with all kinds of thoughtful touches in the rooms, like a hair dryer, a bowl of chocolates, cheerful yellow "rubber duckies" to float in the hot tub, and huge quanitites of back-up towels, toilet paper rolls, shampoo and conditioner.
Coffee machines are set-up the night before in case you get up before breakfast is ready. All you have to do is hit the "on" switch on either the regular or the flavoured coffee machines and it's ready for you (decaf machine can also be set up on request). The video and DVD collection is impressive, with many titles only just out of theatres.
There is in fact a partial ocean view from the pool deck - a great place for evening drinks, lying in the hammock or on a deck chair. And it may not be a short walk, but you can actually walk into town - we did it twice. It's about a 15 minute walk to the Lahaina Cannery Mall/Old Hawaiian Luau/Aloha Mixed Plate/Compadres Restaurant and another 15 minutes to get into the downtown area.
Keep in mind that this is a busy B&B with all kinds of friends and family of the owners and staff showing up throughout the day and evening to help out with chores and to socialize in the kitchen and living room. Sometimes it's hard to find a parking spot.
Our hostess, Jennifer, was very welcoming. On hearing that our flight didn't leave until midnight, she encouraged us to continue to store our luggage in the house and use all the facilities, after checking out, as long as we needed to. It was great to be able to go to the beach, knowing we had a place to return to for a swim and a shower (there's a "house bathroom" for this sort of situation) before flying out that night. Now that's Aloha! I would definitely return to this home-away-from-home.
