Just not the same anymore.... A review of Woodlands Hotel & Suites - Colonial Williamsburg

My husband and I have been staying at the Woodlands Hotel and Suites for 9 years so we have experienced both the old and new hotel. Though more rustic, the old hotel rooms and surroundings were much more relaxing and the staff was much nicer...Upon check in at our latest stay our receptionist didn't even seem interested enough to mutter "Hello, can I help you"..she gave us our room number, showed us how to get there and said 'Next'. Though there were 5 or six stations for checking in and out, there were no more than 2 attendants available at any time making the lobby area quite hectic. Most of the "Woodlands" setting that we loved to absorb for its quietness and gentle surroundings is now a parking lot for buses and cars..there are no more trails to walk on and the pool area that had nice rocking chairs to sit and relax on with your drink and watch the children at the pool has been replaced by concrete, grass and benches with absolutely nothing to look at...The new pool is enclosed by a metal fence that has absolutely no relaxation value.. The Huzzah Restaurant is so expensive that we saw Dominos Pizza being delivered instead of guests patroning the restaurant. The Cascade Restaurant with its relaxing view of an actual cascading waterfall you would watch over a nice buffet breakfast or light dinner is now a conference center, replaced by a continental breakfast at the hotel itself. As far as cleanliness of the hotel the cleaning staff vaccuumed the main hallway several times a day, but no one bothered to pick up the beer cans sitting in the main lobby area left from the previous evening and there was overflowing trash and the smell of sour milk in the continental breakfast area when we attempted to get some late night coffee. The thinness of the walls between the rooms themselves made it easy to hear not only the TV from the room next door, but the movement of the shower curtain and the subsequent shower that occurred. Even though a few calls were made to the front desk, children were still running, and screaming down the hallways well past midnight. Needless to say, we will not be returning to the place the my husband and I thought we would be spending our vacations at well in to our retirement years. Having to purchase earplugs just to get some sleep was not what we had in mind for a relaxing vacation. On the one plus side, if you need concierge services, the folks there couldn't be more helpful. Maybe they could run the hotel.....
