"interesting" A review of Hacienda Hotel & Spa

Stayed at this hotel Dec 28/02-Jan 04/03. Five people, all-inclusive, flight between Calgary and Puerto Vallarta arranged through Air Transat.

The hotel boasts four "stars" - would appear to be self-awarded or perhaps based on some (lower) Mexican standards. Our travel agent was working from a guidebook which suggested 2.5 stars, which is fair. Price was reasonable. Food is served in two establishments. One is a permanent restaurant in the building, with a buffet line and three distinct seating areas - indoor, looking out through windows; semi-indoors in a roofed patio; and outdoors on the patio. The second is a small bar/ fast food eatery under a high straw roof beside the pool.

The hotel has a pool, but is not on the beach - it's about a block as the crow flies, but foot access is via the much larger Krystal resort next door. The Hacienda Buenaventura maintains a small "beach club" on the sand in front of one corner of the Krystal - tent, makeshift bar, and a collection of beach chairs. Pleasant atmosphere, and the staff was quite attentive.

On the rooms - we had two rooms. The one for two people featured a king-sized bed; the one for three featured two beds of approximately "double" size. No box springs - the mattresses rested on raised pads of concrete, for a VERY firm effect. The general atmosphere was a tad rustic, but not falling down by any means.

The majority of the rooms face onto the pool. The small number which don't face onto two small courtyards, one of which includes the lobby. There are no elevators, and some rooms are on the fourth floor. Actually, the hallways form an interesting maze, and I can see that some guests would need assistance locating their rooms for the first couple of times!

It's about 5 minutes from the airport, and two blocks from the marina. There is a bus stop outside the hotel, and that's how we got downtown - 4 pesos for the ride of a lifetime.

General impression - certainly no Four Seasons or Ritz, but quite reasonable. Your mileage may vary.
