Immaculate & beautiful inn but no air conditioning and unsympathetic innkeepers A review of Camden Maine Stay Inn
While I take responsibility for not inquiring if this beautiful and very clean inn had air conditioning, it never occured to me to ask.
I have traveled to Maine before and know that if an inn does not offer air conditioning, they make the fact known to their prospective guests. At no point in the conversation, while I was making my reservation, was this fact mentioned. It was also not posted on their web site.
I am a middle aged woman on allergy injections who is also experiencing the symptoms of menopause. We had reserved the "Stichery Suite" which includes the entire third floor. We arrived on Sept. 28, 2004, and while it was very pleasant outside, the temperature on the third floor was uncomfortably warm with a slight musty odor that is often present in older homes. When I asked Bob, the inkeeper, about the air conditioning, he told me that I could open the windows and use the ceiling fans. With pollen allergies, you cannot sleep in a room wth open windows at night, unless you want to be sick the next day. And a warm room at night intensifies menopausal symptoms. We spent a quite uncomfortable night in a lovely room.
The next morning, we knew that we could not stay the other two nights under the same conditions. When I spoke to Juanita about my discomfort, she began telling me about several of her friends who had serious illnesses, and commented that we should be grateful for our own good health. I told her that I am very grateful to the Good Lord for all my many blessings, and that I was especially grateful that He had blessed me to the financial extent that I could afford to not have to sleep where my health and comfort were comproised.
I was prepared to pay for, and did pay for, the two additional nights already booked. Juanita said that if they could rent the rooms, my credit card would not be billed. I appreciated the offer of that possible compensation, but I did not expect anything other than to pay for what I had reserved. Since my credit card was billed, I assume that the rooms were vacant the two other nights.
I am posting my experience to advise guests with health concerns, who need air conditioning, to always ask in advance. Maine is a unique and beautiful place. Long days and pleasant nights to you all with God's Blessings!
