Hotel in a great location but needing care and attention. A review of Hotel Casa Marcello

We stayed a week in October 2004 and the first night got an awful room - very small with a toilet, no basin, in a cupboard off the room and a tiny shower+basin off the room through another door. The bed was rockhard and it was noisy from the street. They changed us next morning to a better room but not a suite as in the other reviews. Although the sheets and towels were changed several times, the room and bathroom were not cleaned during the whole week! Breakfast was OK but there was often a queue for a table and the staff were not very efficient at topping things up. Other guests complained also. The whole place seemed a bit neglected but could be beautiful with good management as the location is fantastic and we had a great week otherwise. I recommend a trip to the National Theatre for the opera or ballet - the best seats in the centre first circle are a fraction of the prices at home and it is wonderful. Watch the taxi fares - it shouldn't cost more than about 500 euros to/from the airport.
