Horrible Experience - Do Not Stay at this Hotel A review of Mountain Harbor Inn Resort On the Lake
The pictures on the website and brochure in no way resemble what you will find or experience at this inn. When we arrived we were shocked that our rooms were right on one of the busiest highways in the mountains and cars/trucks were zooming by - this was not the quiet retreat we had expected. We asked if the traffic slowed down at night and inquired about noise and we were told it would be very quiet at night. This was not true. We were up all night with the noise of of cars and trucks zooming past our bedroom window and it sounded like they were coming through the wall into our room. In addition, the room was so full of flies that we had to request a fly swatter to kill them. We were told that new carpet had been installed and apparently they had left the door open.
This was supposed to be a special weekend for my wife and myself, and we knew after one night that we had to find a hotel where we could get a good nights sleep. We went to the front desk, told them our situation, and said we were checking out to find another place to stay. We were abruptly told that we would have to pay for the two additional nights (we were more than willing to pay for the night we stayed) as they had a no-cancellation policy. At no time were we ever advised in advance that there was no-cancellation policy. To make a long story short, we checked out, went to Gatlinburg and found a lovely hotel to spend the rest of the weekend.
When we checked out we told them that we were going to contact American Express and dispute the charge for the nights we didn't stay, as we were not told in advance about the cancellation policy, nor were we told at check-in. When we returned home, we contacted AMEX and told them about this experience and disputed the charge. We also wrote a very polite and business-like letter to the inn owner explaining the situation and requesting a credit on our AMEX card. To our shock and surpise, we received one of the nastiest letters I have ever read from the owner. We were personally attacked by the owner and called many things that I don't want to put in writing. I should have hired a lawyer and sued the guy for slander, but obviously he's going to be out of business soon anyway. He also said he had given us a gift certificate for the addtional night's stay (he didn't!) but needless to say, there's no way we would ever stay at this place again.
Please save your money and time and do not stay at this hotel. It is not as advertised. Also, please read the other reviews and you'll see that we're not alone in our opinion of this inn.
