Hip New Zaza A review of Hotel ZaZa Houston

I was in Houston for tuesday night and decided to check Hotel Zaza. I attempted to book it online but the website was having a glitch or two. I called the hotel direct and got a "petite king" for $175. Check in went fine. I was given room 521 it was small but very stylish with a great view of the very lovely pool area. The bed was wonderfully luxurious and the opposite wall was mirrored with a large flat screen tv hung across the mirror, nice touch. The bathroom was small with a molded thick glass-topped vanity and sink on a stainless stand next to the glass shower. The bath products were Bulgari. The only problem with the bath was that precious little room was left for the toilet which was wedged next to the vanity. The closet was large with nice nice robe and safe. The room was very quiet despite overlooking the pool. The artwork in the hallways and the elevators is very hip Hollywood , quite a change from the old Warwick. The pool area with it's cabanas is vintage Hollywood. The lobby and ballrooms were a bit dark and some of the decor ( woman in a cage hanging over a pond) is a bit over the top, also the lower floor had a musty smell, hopefully a temporary problem.

We had dinner and lunch at Monarch. I had lamb and my girl had halibut. Both were really good and the wonton wrapped goat cheese and spinach salad was delicious. We also ordered asparagus that never arrived and the coffee was cold, not room temp, but cold. The waitress, Jamie, was quick to bring us a hot cup. The bar was happening and loud and the martini's were dry and delicious.

Lunch was nice and leisurely we tried the chicken salad croissant and the salmon, both were good and the Belgian fries were great. Our waiter Thomas was very cheery and prompt.

BTW the business center has not yet opened and I was without a laptop so you might be sure to pack one.

Overall a really nice hotel. I always liked the Warwick and Zaza takes it to a new trendy level. I did not get to visit the spa but I plan to next time. The pool is the perfect place for a nice weekend getaway or a cool drink before a nice dinner at Monarch.

I definitely prefer this Zaza to the one in Dallas. If you're in Houston for a trendy/spendy weekend Zaza is your place.
