Hip, modern, funky design A review of Shade Hotel

My husband and I spent a long, lazy weekend at Shade. The hotel is a very short walk (1.5 blocks) down to the beach, surrounded by a number of excellent bars and eateries. (Rock 'n Fish and Manhattan Beach Brewery were our favorites.) The staff at Shade is very attentive. Rooms are unlike any hotel I've ever experienced - from the twisting "cyclone" fireplace to the tri-colored "chromatherapy" lighting, Shade was definitely unique. The food at the Zinc bar is pretty amazing; we enjoyed the crab and asparagus frittata for breakfast and the wide selection of tapas for dinner (or late-night snacking). Chocolate cupcakes are to die for. One night there was a private event in the bar, so the management hosted a complimentary cocktail hour for guests on the rooftop bar. The crowd at the Zinc bar is young and beautiful. It was packed every night, with a line out the door. (Hotel guest can walk right in.) Be sure to take advantage of the free use of the "strand cruiser" bicycles to explore the different beach towns along the coast.
