Highly recommended--we loved it! A review of Narrow Gauge Inn
My son and I loved the Narrow Gauge Inn, a small, charming, older hotel. Our room in June 2003 was small, with just enough space for a side table between the beds, but it had a nice balcony with a lovely view (our room was closer to the restaurant than the office) and nice bathroom. You want a room on the top level closest to the road if you can get one. The pool is small but beautifully situated. Flowers everywhere on the grounds. The restaurant is wonderful -- excellent buffet breakfasts in the morning came with the room, and the dinners were extraordinary, with excellent service. The office staff couldn't have been nicer. Definitely contact SOUTHERN YOSEMITE MOUNTAIN GUIDES (ask for guides Jerry or Tenaya) and they will take you to the hidden, uncrowded splendors of Yosemite, whether you want to backpack or just sightsee. The Narrow Gauge is close to one of the big lodges, where you can get a fabulous lunch or more substantial breakfast, but I prefer the N.G. for lodging. I recommend the gold-panning afternoon in the valley--a lot of fun for my 11-year-old. The train ride was okay but not a highlight.
