Great views, nice pool, near downtown but private A review of Bluebeard's Castle Resort
We have stayed at Bluebeard's a number of times over the last ten years. Most people who stay there are timeshare owners, but there are also many who are just visiting it as a hotel. Frequently these have some sort of "deal," so do check around before paying full price. That said, the units are kept in excellent order, and the 1BR units are very spacious.
Most of the rooms have a view, as the hotel sits atop a hill overlooking all of Charlotte Amalie's sailboat-filled harbor, the eastern hills neighborhood, and downtown to the west. The hill is private; there is a guard house and there are patrols (low-key) to keep people feeling safe and cared-for, there is a useful shuttle for those who do not want to be bothered with a rental car (although these are fairly inexpensive), and there is a nice little bistro/restaurant near the front of the tunnel, overlooking the harbor, a fancy restaurant to the east of the pool (try the bistro first!), and a very ordinary restaurant to the west/above the pool. There is also a poolside bar/grill.
There are activities most nights, including a pool party with jumbie dancers, fire jugglers, and free bottles of rum being given away in quantity (so DO participate in the dancing!), an orientation morning in which most of the island's attraction/operations come to you - you can sign up for dive trips, parasailing, submarine rides, or boat rentals all beside the pool. Best of off (for us), you can easily walk down the "back way" into town (SW corner of the property, closed-to-vehicles road leading from the lower parking area below the gym) for shopping, sightseeing or dining.
