Great View, Romantic Getaway A review of Lucia Lodge
Just got back from a NoCal trip with 2 nights at the Lucia Lodge. All the reviews - pros and cons - were accurate to a point. I believe that if you stay in the 4 free standing cabins just off the parking lot (#s 10, 9, 8, 7 - we were in #8), you won't experience the noise of the neighbors or the car disruption AND you will have the best views. I would only stay in those 4 - reasons are documented by the other Bostonian. I did not experience the poor service or rudeness of the staff - the staff was friendly enough and the room was cleaned as expected. I did have to clean the windows myself though - spending that much a night, I was going to enjoy a view without seagull droppings in my site line. The free continental breakfast was more than expected - no complaints at all. The fruit was fresh, good, and plentiful and the coffee was fresh and hot.
Bottom line here: it is worth the money to stay in a place with this view and falling asleep/waking up to the sound of the surf crashing on the rocks below. The cabin was rustic, but romantic. It is not a motel or a camp ground either. The location is right in the middle of the Big Sur coast too - easy access down to Morrow Bay and up to Monterey. I can see where some people were discouraged, but I felt it was worth it. Beware that it can be predominantly foggy in that part of the world though - it is not sunny California all the time - no matter what they say. Bring your hiking boots, get a convertible, a room on the ocean, and don't let the fog deter you - it is a beautiful coastal area. Explore, explore, explore - hit the Pfifer St. Beach. Do your homework with the restaurants. With a little planning you don't have to get ripped off by those ridiculously priced restaurants - they are so not worth it. You can find a decent place at a decent price. If you want fine dining, go to San Francisco. Hope this helps.
