Great rooms but not perfect A review of Rancho Valencia
We stayed there recently for a week. The room is beautiful and spacious with a lovely patio (go for the bigger suites). The grounds are well kept with a croquet lawn which we enjoyed very much. The resort is building a spa - ask for a room away from the construction.
The major problem with this resort is the restaurant. The teriyaki sauce in the salmon struck terror to my palate! The foie gras was burnt. My husband's chicken soup reminds him of college food. The service needs improvement (our appetizers appeared before they gave us the wine list). It is very expensive but what kept us away is the standard of food.
The service at the resort is generally very good but the coincierge did not get back to us when I asked them for sightseeing recommendations.
My husband took a few tennis lessons but finds the pros very "business-like". He prefers the pros at the PBI clinics in Four Seasons Chiang Mai, Four Seasons Bali and Marriott Phuket. Inn at the Manitou (Ontario Canada) also has a great tennis school.
