Great home-away-from-home hotel A review of Astor Private Hotel
As a group that comprises 61 adults and children, I have to admit that our circumstances and requirements were not what you would consider normal. However, for a hotel to be able to accommodate our requirements and even exceed our expectations is the reason that we've given Astor a 5-star rating. The hotel is not exactly modern in terms of decor and facilities but the qualities that we were after were: central, clean, warm and secure (when you have 42 young charges, security is paramount). We got what we wanted and more. Being able to book out the entire hotel has been a great advantage to our group as it means that we can use the facilities as if we were 'at home', without having to worry about other guests. This has been of great benefit to us. The decor and facilities can best be described as 'quaint'. It exudes old school charm and might not be everyone's cup of tea, especially if you've stayed at plush 5-star hotels. But for the qualities mentioned above, this hotel certainly delivers in spades. And I've saved the best for last: Tildy, the owner of the hotel, is the reason that this hotel is so highly rated. She made us feel welcome from the get-go, and has worked so hard to feed and house us in a professional but personable way. No request has been too arduous. She does not make you feel bad about asking for something. Her personality is larger than the nearby Mt Wellington, and she is just a lovely person who makes you feel like part of the family. It's hard to describe; you just have to book and stay at this hotel to experience what I mean. Tildy, you are the best!
