Great Escape! A review of Outrigger Fairway Villas
My husband and I stayed at the Outrigger Fairway Villas for our honeymoon (March 29-April 4 2004). This was our first time in Hawaii. We loved our stay so much that we considered purchasing a unit! We stayed in unit D4 and had a gorgeous view of the golf course. Although we are not golfers, it was fun to watch others play from our unit. The location of FV is very quaint, yet convenient. Waikoloa is about 25 miles from Kona, so having the Kings Shops nearby was a plus especially when we ran out of a food/drug items. Being in Waikoloa also made us feel like we were on a remote pristine island. Kona is a little more commercialized so staying at the resort made it really feel like a vacation! It is so quiet (especially at night) that you are almost embarrassed to walk with flip-flops on! We LOVED our unit's amenities. It felt almost like home. Although not a full scale maid service, the cleaning staff did a wonderful job with keeping it clean enough for us to do a moderate amount of cleaning but still feel like you are on vacation. Upon arrival, our unit did not have a blender, which was stated on the internet. After one call to the front desk, the cleaning staff brought it to our door. Our unit was moderately decorated with a tropical/Hawaiian motif. The King bed was awesome. My husband and I could hardly get out of it! We had an awesome honeymoon. Be prepared to pay more for EVERYTHING (gas, groceries at Walmart/Safeway, and restaurants).
We only had a few complaints. 1) Be sure to stay on the first floor for the awesome opportunity to walk out on your Lanai and on to the golf course (for us). The flip side is to NOT stay on the first floor because if anyone is upstairs (especially a family) you will hear them walking and running whenever they are in their unit. We complained to Management and were blackballed afterwards. 2) We were interested in talking to the Manager Kris Nickelson about the noise upstairs but also about purchasing a condo. Kris shunned us and treated us like second-class citizens! He did not even have the aloha spirit nor the decency to come out of the glass office and talk to us, although we could see him clearly from where we were standing. Instead, he sent his assistant out to tell us to talk to assistant General Manager Dale Verkaaik. She was very nice, personable and gracious enough to listen to our concerns about the noise as well as our consideration in purchasing a property. In fact SHE should be in charge and not KRIS. 3) Lastly, the Wednesday Luau at the Marriott was disappointing as it was inside due to threatening rain. The entertainment and dance was mediocre but the food was great. We went to Kona Coast Resort to listen to a time-share presentation .... we wish we would have done that sooner because they gave us a discount card for all other tours on the island!
Despite staying up at night and listening to folks run/walk above you and being shunned by the the General Manager of Outrigger Fairway Villas, we would definitely stay again. We visited the Hilton, the Fairmont Orchid and of course walked to the Marriott. They are all nice hotels, but not as new and clean. And, considering the price of eating out, you would want to stay at FV so you can cook and cut cost! The Front desk Marriott staff was also gracious enough to let us check out at a later hour due to our late plane departure.
Again, we LOVED Hawaii and look forward to returning in the near future!
