Great beaches worth the spend A review of Longboat Key Club & Resort
The area is beautiful, the beaches are pristine, and the water doesn't get much warmer (or clearer) as it does in Longboat Key. The hotel has plenty of facilities, including golf course, tennis courts, pool & sauna, and a workout center (although I was disappointed that there were no Precor machines, only treadmills and Stepmasters!) I did not have a great experience with the staff. When we checked in, I politely asked if they could upgrade us from a golf view to an ocean view, and the clerk said he couldn't as they were booked solid that night - despite that it was a weeknight and in the middle of the off season! Sure enough, there were LOADS of empty parking spaces, and very few people milling about, it was hard to believe that they couldn't upgrade us! The golf course view suite was like a very spacious studio, with a kitchenette (fairly new appliances), sitting area, king size bed, and an unusually long bathroom hall way, which led to a not-so-large bathroom (combination shower/tub). We also had a fairly large patio, which would be more bearable if there was some shade to counter the scorching heat! Beach facilities are hard to beat, with free cabanas, which guests can't use after 5pm, but they do supply plastic lounge chairs for evening use. The pool was a little too crowded during the day (and this was during the off season!) with lots of families with kids under 10, I can't imagine how crowded it would be during peak season. All in all, a little pricey for what you get - although some relatives have had MUCH better experiences with the staff and they have visited the hotel on numerous occasions, so I'd be willing to give it another chance based on their raving reviews.
