Great accomodations, but in shady part of town A review of Memphis Marriott
I've stayed here for a couple of weeks on business in Jan, 2005. The hotel itself is very nice with nice elegant lobby and bar area, and clean, well furnished rooms. In addition, if you're a Gold member or above in Marriott Rewards program, you get free breakfast buffet (made-to-order omlets, fruit bar, etc.) at the hotel's restaurant. GREAT! The gym is also not bad, although there are no free weights and the universal gym is definitely in need of replacement. Nonetheless, you can get semi-decent workout if you can live with some limitations. (For one, where you should find lat pull-down bars, you find just a short bar used for tricep workout.)
The location is good/bad depending on what you need. It's right off of I-240, about 10 minutes from the airport, so it's convenient if you don't mind driving around Memphis (this hotel is about 25-30 minutes from downtown). However, the surrounding neighborhood, from what my co-worker who lives in Memphis tells me, is not a good one; that explains the high metal fences that surround the hotel lot. Choices of dining in the vincity of the hotel is limited to Arby's, Popoye's, Taco Bell and IHOP; mostly fast-food places.
If you mostly stay in the hotel during your visit, or drive out to your destinations, and if you're a Gold Member or higher, you'll enjoy the hotel. If you make frequent uses of local conveniences, then you'll find this place lacking.
