Good B&B A review of Mira Monte Inn
Good 'full service' B&B. Mira Monte is in a nice location for walks to town -- far enough that noise and bustle is not a problem but close enough that you can easily get to the downtown area on foot. Our room, the Grand Central, was nicely appointed and spacious. Staff offers /excellent/ recommendations *tailored to you* for restaurants, activities, etc. Also they can loan you a good audio CD driving tour of Acadia and provide you with suitable maps and other local materials.
As a larger B&B, service was a little less intimate than expected. Staff seemed more hired help, not husband-and-wife or family hosts. Breakfast is a help-yourself continental/buffet style. Food is OK but not great. Lots of choices but don't get there towards the end or items can be gone or picked over. Also, guests in their upper 30's-40's and up might feel most comfortable here. We are 30 (and old for our age) and felt the crowd, while friendly, was a bit stuffy. Never quite felt welcome sitting down for the afternoon wine- and cheese tastings though if that's your sort of thing I'm sure it's nice. (We didn't feel like playing "the kids" to a group of 50-somethings.)
Overall the place was a good choice but on a future trip to Bar Harbor we might gamble on a different B&B just to try for a slightly different personality.
BTW, while on MDI don't miss Thurston's in Bernard and the Lobster Claw on West St.
