Good Accomodation, Great food! A review of Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort
Location - about 25 miles East of the park entrance at El Portal. Not far but a 50 minute drive along the winding road which runs alongside the Merced River.
Overview. If you want five star luxury with top class service do not stay here, you will be disappointed. If you want comfortable accommodation, good wholesome food and a great atmosphere then this is the place for you.
Reception - is a small office just off the eating area. The staff are very friendly and will give you as much, or as little, information you need about the area and walks.
Accommodation - is in tents, dorms or cabins. We stayed in a small cabin with double bed and en suite shower and toilet. We were there in the middle of May and the rates were very good.
Our room was a good size and had a comfortable bed. Do not expect daily maid service. It doesn't happen. It will if you request it but you will have to make your own bed and put out your own trash. The only improvement we would have suggested would have been to use brighter colours. Our walls were a very dark green, but then again we didn't spend long inside.
Food - they say on their website that the locals eat here - and they do. The food is of very high quality and well cooked. We didn't get French fries once - which was nice. But we did get fresh vegetables every night. There was a choice of five entrees plus at least one vegetarian option. The beer was good but cheap.
If you go walking be sure to order a pre packed lunch. Very good value and tasty.
Would we go back? - Yes. Great atmosphere. We met some very interesting people too but remember. This is a hostel. We are both over 40, as were many other guests, but there were lots of young people who liked to enjoy themselves. We were never woken but we heard that some others were.
Finally - if you have never been to Yosemite. Go. It looks like something Walt Disney created. But he didn't. It's still magic though. Don't rush through. We stayed 5 nights and saw all the major sites and did most of the recommended walks.
