Golf to die for, service the wisconsin way A review of The American Club
OK lets start, the river course is awesome, whistling straights now a legend, but the hotel can not keep up with the splendor of the golf experience. We spent three nights here just before the ryder cup on what was a perfect golf trip....the hotel is very nice but with 5 diamonds and 5 stars we expected a lot more and we could not quite figure out what was wrong...this looks like a five star property, the guest to staff ratio is awesome, people to help you everywhere, the attitude is right, no one ever responds without a helpful feel but it just did not feel right....the rooms were nice, the baths are dated and could use a refresh (surprising seeing this is KOHLER!), the spa was great...we finally figured out what was different, not wrong, but different than our favorite resorts at pebble or a mandarin or four seasons - the staff were all local people. They really wanted to help but most of then have probably never even been to chicago, forget being wordly....the lack of diversity in the resources shows through from the asst mgr level down...everytone said sure, no problem to our requests, and I am sure they wanted to help, but most just didn't get it or could not figure out how to execute....anyway, go for the golf, forgive them for the food and wine (one retaurant said they gave up the Riedel glassware because they broke it too often and we had to drink a $300 bottle of wine in $1 jellyjars on a stem, another restaurant couldn't decant our wine because another diner was using the decanter (they really only have one!)).....expect 4 star property with 3 star service and 5 star golf and you will be fine.
