Executive Tower is top-rate; main bldg isn't A review of Hilton Portland & Executive Tower
Hilton Exec Tower: five stars
Hilton Main Bldg: two stars
A convention brought me to Portland, and put me in the Hilton Executive Tower for a week. Great hotel -- new and clean, spacious rooms, nice furnishings, great bed, convenient to everything (seemed like the best location in Portland). Best of all, the hotel room was really really quiet -- didn't hear anyone in the hall, or in other rooms, or any strange noises from the bldg systems. This was a great experience, and for $145 a night, I thought a really great deal.
A week later I had opportunity to spend a night in the Hilton main building, across the street from the Exec Tower. I opted for main building because the cheapest rate there was $15 cheaper than the cheapest rate at Exec Tower that night, but there was really no comparison between the two hotels. My room at main Hilton was very small, bathroom was kind of dated and depressing, and worst of all the building made all sorts of strange, loud noises (plumbing and a/c) all through the night.
Hilton Exec Tower is probably as good as any other place in Portland (albeit with more of a cool modern feel than some of the historic hotels). I'd guess that staying in the Exec Tower rather than the main Hilton is probably worth paying a premium of up to $50 a night (they're not just separate buildings, they're really separate classes of hotels, and you'll have a much better trip). But if you can't get into the Exec Tower and your only option is the Hilton main building, I'd consider some of the other comparable hotels in Portland instead. The main Hilton's lobby is nice, and the health club is impressive, and the location is great, but my room had some serious problems that you shouldn't have to deal with when you're paying around $150 a night.
