Elegant but not stuffy A review of Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows

We stayed in an Ocean View room with a private balcony looking towards the pier and a King Size Bed, seating area but a smaller bathroom than we were expecting. The total rate was £152.85 a night for the 3 nights over a weekend. Santa Monica was not on the beach as we presumed but set back from the freeway that separates the two. However this place grows on you and the people are classy and friendly. Spend a day at the beach and watch the American Picnic - it is a sight to be believed when you see how muc food and drink arrives! Also, Venice Beach is as nuts as you can imagine but a great place to spend some time chilling and people watching. Ate dinner in Ocean - a few blocks down from the hotel. It was wonderful and we staggered out much later having eaten far too much wonderful seafood. Watch out though, to ask for a break between the appetizer and entree! If you are served with too much food anywhere, ask for a takeout and give it to one of the hundreds of homeless along the front - seems to be a local tradition. There are lots and lots of homeless here but they never beg and never hassle so far less intimidating than you would expect. The pier is overrated and feels like an American Blackpool which tends to feel quite edgy later on as the gangs gather.
