Edgy -- great if you're tough enough A review of Ace Hotel Portland
After a five-night stay, we are hooked. But it's not for everyone (and sure doesn't try to be). Props to the location -- two blocks from Powell's Books, a gorgeous Whole Foods, and within easy walking distance to tons of great restaurants, theaters, and galleries, as well as downtown offices. Streetcar right outside the door. What's not so hot: don't get a back room on the 2nd floor -- you'll be staring at a brick wall just feet away. Because the windows are single paned, the night life on the front side is loud. Don't count on coddling; the accommodations are austere to say the least. But the basics are strong-- good mattress, great cotton sheets, very nice shower. Lots of atmosphere. The best coffee I've ever had was at Stump City Coffee, right through the lobby, and the Clyde Commons bar and restaurant were terrific. Ace Hotels, both in Portland and Seattle, provide an unusual, sometimes challenging, authentic experience. We found it exhilarating but beware, it's very different from Kimptons or, heaven forbid, Westins or Marriotts!
Thank you for taking the time to provide a great review, I appreciate your assessment of the hotel and I think it will help future travelers to Portland and the Ace. Glad you liked it!
