Don't stay here! A review of Vistas on the Gulf

Labor Day Weekend, Aug 28-Sep 1, 2003 We just returned from a long weekend vacation at "Vistas on the Gulf". We checked in at about 4:30 pm on Thursday to find our assigned room had a Gulf view but was one room away from the furthest possible from the beach - not what we had hoped for - so, we asked if rooms were available Gulf front. We were given the opportunity to upgrade to one of several available Gulf front units for $50 more per night. We immediately agreed and took the office manager's advice which unit was the best. We retrieved our belongings from the car and settled into our 2nd floor Gulf front unit. At about 5:10 pm we took a glass of wine out on our Gulf front balcony to relax, only to find swarms of "Love bugs" from the sand dunes (5 feet away from the balcony). I know Love bugs don't bite but swarms of bugs landing on your arms, legs, head, wine glass, etc... has a way of taking the fun out of sitting outside. I went back down to the office at 5:15 pm to ask to move to one of the other available units on a higher floor but, they closed the office and have no on-site representatives after 5:00. OK, I thought, we'll deal with it for the night and request to move when they reopen at 9:00am the next morning.

At 9:30am the next morning I made the request and was told "no." There is a 3 night minimium stay --- not just at the property but in an individual unit. I pleaded my case with the office manager and several off-site managers, some were more pleasant than others, but was told the policy was absolute -- this despite the fact that only 10 or so the the 41 units were occupied (at the highest occupancy point of the entire weekend). So, we spent an additional $200 to stay in a unit with an unusable balcony. Other little things: There isn't any housekeeping service (or at least not for the 4 nights we were there) to vacuum up all the dead bugs in front of the balcony doors (don't know how they get in, but they do), no simple ammenities like dishwashing detergent or trash bags (if you don't take your trash out they charge extra), and check out time is 10:00am - don't even think about a late checkout. By the way, I told the last (really condescending manager, John) that I was so disappointed in their lack of customer service and inflexible policy that I was going to post this review when I got home. He said that was fine.
