Does Not Live Up to Renaissance Standards A review of Renaissance Long Beach Hotel

Having stayed at various Marriott properties, including quite a few Renaissance hotels, I know what to expect in service. I am used to the plain old idiosyncracies that can be easily ignored, and I know when the service is just plain bad. Unfortunately, this hotel walks that fine line.

My first impression of the hotel was when I pulled up to find no valet. Since I was arriving at 2 p.m. (a bit early for check-in), I just chalked it up to bad timing. Upon entering the lobby, I was impressed by the airy open spaces and contemporary, fresh furnishings. The check-in clerk was new and very gracious. She did, however, have to go into the back to ask her manager how to deal with the computer. She offered us an oceanview room on the 10th floor. She also got a bellhop for us, and our bags arrived within 5 minutes of being in our room.

Upon arriving in our room, we were a bit disappointed. The furnishings were worn and wallpaper was peeling in places. We opened our curtains to see a very nice view of the Morgan Stanley builiding across the street. If you cocked your head just right, you got a fairly decent view of the harbor and port operations. The bathroom was spacious and was probably luxurious at one time. Unfortunately, the floor tile was cracked in places. The granite vanity was not lovingly cared for as it lost must of its shine in random places. The bed was perhaps the most disappointing part of the room. With upscale properties, I have become accustomed to pillowtop beds. When pillowtop beds are not available, you generally get plush bedspreads. Unfortunately, this hotel had neither. To make matters worse, the bed was just uncomfortable. It was reminiscent to my stays at Motel 6.

We ate breakfast for two morinings and opted for the buffet. The waitstaff was very friendly, but extemely sporadic. We often had to wait for drink refills and for our check.

Check-out was a breeze with no surprises. The bellhop and valet were quite helpful.

In all, this hotel is really not worth the extra money I spent. The "Renaissance" name is not appropriate for this hotel.
