By the sea?? A review of BEST WESTERN PLUS Fireside Inn on Moonstone Beach
My husband and I just stayed two nights at the Fireside Inn by the Sea, one of the many Inns and Motels that have amazing cliff-side, ocean-facing views. As we drove down Moonstone lDrive ooking for our lodging, we were excited to see other Inns that had adirondack chairs on their grounds out front so guests could relax and face the ocean. So our first reaction as we pulled into the BW Fireside was "dang, there are no sitting areas at our place where you can view this amazing vista" (unless you have one of the ocean front or ocean/view rooms, of course.) We were extremely disappointed when we saw our assigned room w/a king bed was in the back of the property, and not only did not have a view, but was an extremely dark room with a window that faced a a fence, a tree, and the cars whizzing by the main highway. It was a very booked weekend, and the only potential room switch they could offer us would put us in a smaller room in a hall near a noisy ice making machine, so we resigned ourselves to staying put. The room itself is fine -- generously sized, with a fireplace, a surprising amount of walking/sitting area with couch, good sized bathrooms. Decor is nothing amazing, but tasteful. The grounds near our room looked unpleasant in that the hotel was doing the last of their renovations, and many boxes of something (new furniture?) were piled high near our room.
Adequate/small pool area, large jacuzzi. Nicer continental breakfast than many places (bagels, scones, muffins, pastries, cereals and the usual drinks, plus fruit). We felt a mixed feeling as we started this trip because of our dark, face-the-highway room...so close to the beautiful cliffs and pathways with ocean vistas, and yet so far! I know we would have been much happier with an ocean view room, but the prices seemed steep enough for the deluxe. Very happy with proximity to beach, walkways, nearby restaurants, etc. (try the Sea Chest for great fresh fish in a casual atmosphere, but they don't take reservations, so be prepared to wait for a seat). Best thing was that when we checked out, we voiced our disappointment to the excellent general manager, who listened attentively to what we had to say, apologized sincerely that we weren't happy, and kindly refunded us 20% of the tab. The manager alone earned the place many points in my book, for demonstrating the kind of customer service that is often sorely lacking these days.
Bottom line, might stay again if we could have a sunnier, view room.
