Bugs in room & very hot!! A review of Ramada On The Beach

Hated It. July 13, 2004. Will never go back. Our first room was extremely hot. The air conditioner was not strong enough despite supposedly being new. My whole family could not sleep past 5:30am (when the sun came up) due to the heat. We were not overly sensitive to the heat because we had just spent 8 glorious days in a Hotel at (even hotter) Myrtle Beach with a room on the top floor (14th) and were extremely comfortable.

We thought it would be nice to check out Virginia Beach for a couple of nights on our way home from Myrtle Beach.

When we complained about the A/C, the maintenance man said the A/C unit was new and was not broken. He cleaned the A/C filters and said it might help cool off the room. He told us to just keep the drapes closed or ask for another room. Keeping the heavy drapes closed made the room completely dark and since two lights were not working, our "oceanview" room felt like a dark dank cave. We went out for lunch to let the room cool off, but it did not. So we asked to be moved to another room.

The second room's A/C unit was different. It was either ice cold & "migraine headache loud" (right beside the head of the bed) or when turned down even slightly made this room too hot as well.

Also in the second room our kids noticed a black beetle like bug crawling around on the carpet near the garbage. I thought it was a cockroach. My husband killed it, wrapped it in a tissue and brought it to the front desk. They said not to worry it was not a cockroach, it was a water bug (like that was supposed to make us feel better!!).

At this point we had already lost several hours and were dreading looking for another hotel for one more night . We asked the management if they could at least reduce the price of the room since would did not sleep well the night before due to excessive heat and now there are bugs in our room. They said they would work on something for us. They showed up at our door with a toy sand pail and shovel (my kids are all over 12 years old) and a couple of snacks. We thought this was in addition to a discount. The next day we found out that there was no additional discount, the sand pail was the compensation!!! Unbelievable.

Additionally the indoor pool water was very cold. We own a pool at home so I am quite familiar with what 80 degrees feels like and even though they posted a pool temperature of 80, it was not. Since there was a thunderstorm going on and the beach was closed, this pool was the only thing to do other than sit in the miserable room. I got into the tiny so called hot (warm) tub to warm up. It was full of very small children who also found the pool too cold to swim in.

On another note the rooms did not have any kind of refridgerators, not even a mini bar fridge. The Ice machines could not keep up and were weren't always able to have ice.

The hotel does have a locally famous restaurant which the hotel seems to use to intice guests. Unfortunately it's the ONLY good thing about the hotel.
