Bufflehead Cove: The Quintessential Country Inn A review of Bufflehead Cove Inn
Absolutely my favorite country inn, and I've stayed in at least 100. It's a century-old farmhouse on a private lane by the banks of the Kennebunk River in Kennebunkport, Southern Maine. What makes it so special? Just about everything. Start with the riverside location, where you can see the tide roll in and out, add a forest right behind the large back yard, and the Bufflehead ducks and other creatures that "cruise" up and down the river. Location, location, location! I can easily say that Harriet and Jim's full breakfasts are among the most delicious -- and definitely the most creative -- I've enjoyed anywhere. And, they're experts on dining in the area, which includes many excellent restaurants in all price categories. More gracious, caring hosts will not be found anywhere you go.
If the word "farmhouse" conjurs up something plain, simple, sparse, or ordinary in your mind, you've got it all wrong. Each suite is individually decorated with highly imaginative, luxurious furnishings that simply shout, "Luxury! Comfort!" There's just about every amenity you can name: jacuzzi tubs, Bose radios, beautiful thick comforters and colorful sheets and blankets, an abundance of fascinating books and magazines, gourmet candies with turndown service. The only thing "country" about Bufflehead Cove is that it's more than a mile from town, which adds to the quiet and tranquil setting.
Fresh flowers of many varieties abound during the summer, and breakfast on the large wraparound porch, with these flowers at every table (and decorating your plates), can't be beat. For those who crave total privacy for a romantic getaway, there's a replica of the main house a short distance away that's a wonderful, cozy -- yet very spacious -- hidewaway.
For pet lovers who miss their "children" while away from home, make friends with Lily, the inn's lovely black Laborador retriever. She won't intrude on your privacy by entering the house, but she'll be there to greet you every time you drive up. A sweeter dog I've never met.
Bufflehead Cove is my final destination on my end-of-summer New England vacation every summer. Although Kennebunkport is full of luxury hotels and historic inns, I couldn't bring myself to stay anywhere else.
