Bogart, where are you? A review of Hotel Phoenicia

Got to stay in the Meridian Phoenicia hotel in Malta. January rates brought it into my budget. I don't think I mix well with the rarified strata who stay at five star hotels, but my stay was definitly comfortable! Nice big room, nice big bathrooms! A welcome change from Rome! Breakfast was excellent...but it will take quite a breakfast to justify the 7 Maltese Lira it cost! Thats an expensive bowl of corn flakes! However, the coffee was nearly worth it alone! This is the first time I had Maltese coffee...rich, stronger than American, not as strong as Italian, but all in all, superb. Best part of my trip that coffee... I expected Humphrey Bogart to be sinking into the deep chairs in the lobby. There were a lot of those people who take their vacations here, and don't look like vacationers...you know, the ones who figure they are dressing down by wearing a slightly more colourful tie and only one string of pearls! My jeans, leather jacket and biker hat stood out like a chimney sweep on an ice flow....however civility was the name of the game, and I was made more welcome than I deserved. I liked the place, and I'll be back. Next time, I will remember to bring a tie and blazer and dress for breakfast.
