Blast From the Past A review of Curly Redwood Lodge

We are from the east coast of Canada, and booked this motel because of reader reviews. When one reviewer said it was like stepping back into the 1950s, they weren't kidding. The chairs and lamps were only missing the plastic wrap from my childhood, and the double-deck end table had the same little, metal shields on the feet. The TV had to be at least 15 years old. We had the family suite, which consisted of two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, and one with two double beds, connected via the bathroom.

On the plus side, the room was clean and spacious, however it was lacking in so many amenities modern travellers are used to. The towels were paper thin, there were no ice bucket, no shampoos or other toiletries, no hair dryers, no iron or ironing boards, etc. As soon as we drove in the yard, my teens were up in arms. I said, "Just let's look at the room and if we don't like it, we'll go back to one of the newer hotels." However, the lady at the front desk informed me that the room was mine whether I liked it or not. Again, this is a 1950s attitude towards consumers, and something you do not see very often in modern hotels. I didn't find that the price compensated for the lack of modern service, and wonder how a place like this can stay in business.

Be aware that this motel is clean and spacious, but do be prepared for the spartan accommodations, and quaint attitude towards the traveller.
