Best hotel in Kigali A review of Kigali Serena Hotel

I have stayed in this hotel many times over the last two years, always spending just a couple of days on a business trip. So I dare say I am able to evaluate the hotel's performance over time and validate if there's any consistency in meeting (or not) my expectations. Let's start at the very beginning and that will be airport pick-up: yes, they are able to arrange this for you based on your incoming flight details and are using decent cars. What I don't like is the fact that they will charge double in case you and a fellow traveler (with separate bookings) are sharing a same car. To me the cost of that car remains the same so should not be charged to myself and my colleague as well, I might as well ask for a separate car in that case. Reception and check-in activities usually are handled well. The desk is manned by several people so the wait shouldn't be long. I have stayed in different rooms, in different wings of the hotel. Some will be older and up for refurbishment, others will feel to be more recent. Also the view will vary from one room to another and some even have an outside balcony with deck chairs. All in all, I have always been satisfied with the room I had although some do have a rather noisy airconditioning unit which you may want to check when you are shown your room. Room prices will vary depending on the type of room you are booking but overall are quite pricey. The hotel has a nice pool area with chairs and towels. The pool is not heated so the water might be too cold for some people. They also have a gym, which I didn't use but is OK according to my colleague. I like spending time working on my laptop in the lobby/bar area which has wifi (good enough speed for me). This area has a nice inside and outside area in which they will serve drinks from the bar and also food from the restaurant down stairs. That restaurant is on the pool level and has some tables next to the pool as well as inside. The other (main) restaurant is a larger buffet style restaurant where also breakfast is served. And that, to me, is impressive. Especially taking into account that we are in Kigali. The selection of bread, fruits and hot dishes is very good. Breakfast can be very enjoyable having it on the outside area. Hotel staff has always been helpful and friendly to me, and I once also tested their guest services by booking a trip to the natural park to visit the gorillas, and all went just fine. So overall, I can recommend this hotel although prices are not cheap. My colleagues have 'slept around' in other hotels in Kigali but in the end all came running back to Serena :-).
