Beautiful small hotel with excellent service A review of Hotel Fauchere
I first visited Milford two years ago. The quaint downtown charmed me, the beauty of the Delaware River and Raymond's Kill falls invigorated me, but there was one thing missing--a top-notch hotel, bar or restaurant. I would have loved to punctuate my day with a nice glass of wine, a fine meal and a night in a cozy hotel room.
Two years later, I had a reason to return to Milford. I found out that the Hotel Fauchere, which I'd seen mid-construction, had reopened after an extensive renovation. The care I received from the moment of making my reservation online reflected the kind of attention to detail one would expect of a fine hotel.
The breathtakingly beautiful property, restored elegantly and tastefully, pleases the eye and makes one feel instantly at home. Every surface and every item in the guest room is pleasant to look upon and touch, from the marble and glass bathrooms to the Argentine furniture to the red rotary style phone on the bedside table. Unlike many restored historic properties, the things you don't see--the a/c, plumbing, insulation--received as much attention as the the things you do see. The result is a room that is as quiet and comfortable as it is beautiful, with quiet air conditioning, vault-like sound insulation and endless hot water.
I spent several evenings downstairs in Bar Louis, where I was happy to find a friendly bartender capable of making a perfect martini. The modern decor of the bar, done in light wood and brick, is a pleasant counterpoint to the traditional environment upstairs. Beautiful art hangs on the walls and comfortably padded booths make it all too easy to spend a long evening conversing with friendly, eclectic people. Thankfully there was an elevator to whisk me up to my room at closing time.
I missed the opportunity to dine in the restaurant, but the reviews I heard at the bar from the dozens of people who enjoyed dinner in the Delmonico Room were enthusiastically positive, and I was sorry I didn't think to make reservations ahead of time. I didn't anticipate the popularity of the hotel, which the locals have been waiting for since renovations began.
What makes Hotel Fauchere most memorable to me is the personalized service. During the course of the first day I was greeted by the owners and general manager, and every staff member from the housekeepers to the front desk were unfailing friendly and helpful. I became friends with some of the other patrons who echoed this sentiment. The staff and the level of customer attention is world class.
I will return to Milford and stay at the Fauchere again as soon as I'm able, and this time I'll be sure to book a dinner reservation ahead of time.
