Beautiful Hotel - Ugly Staff A review of Steigenberger Grandhotel

First the good - hotel is in a beautiful area of Brussels, along the Avenue Louise where you will find many lovely shops and restaurants. Also, the hotel itself is gorgeous and our room was enormous, especially by European standards. We joked that the bathroom at the Conrad was the same size as our entire room at our recently departed Paris hotel! Extremely clean.

However, the bad greatly outweighs the good in my opinion, so we will not stay again. The staff is either (a) incompetent and/or (b) nonexistent. I am used to staying at the Royal Windsor where they have been extremely friendly (and present!) as I enter and leave the hotel. No problems making reservations, ordering taxis, etc.

At the Conrad, they were dramatically understaffed at all times, many times there was not even anyone at the front door to say "bonjour" and be available to help with baggage, etc.

The front desk staff were obsessed with the phone and would let you stand there literally forever as long as the phone kept ringing. Not so much as an "I apologize, I'll be with you in a moment" but just pretended you don't exist.

Upon arrival asked for a taxi to be ordered for me the following morning to take me to our work facility and they said "oh, there's a line of them outside in the morning." So, first day, waited outside for several minutes and started to head over to the street since no employees were around, 1/2way to the street when employee came out and said "do you need something?". A taxi was procured from the "line" and then a 20 Euro trip became 50 Euros as the driver proceeded to drive all around the city, Second day, taxi reeeeeeeeked of cigarettes and body odor, I had to hang my head out the window (literally) all the way there. After this, I talked with my colleagues at our facility there, they called Hol-Taxi which sent a LOVELY brand-new mercedes with leather seats and a gentlemanly driver to pick me up at work to go back to the hotel and then we used them again the next day to go to the airport. Exact same price as regular taxi and much cheaper than Mr.-Let's-Tour-the-City!

One of the few times the Conrad staff were present at the front door, they nearly prevented my boyfriend from entering. Several rounds of "can we help you" and a response of "no, thank you" as they blocked the entrance led finally to him saying "well, do you want to carry my packages up to my room?" and they then said "oh, you are staying here?".

In short, extremely understaffed and unfriendly, perhaps it might be better if you are a celebrity or a dignitary, but we of the "ordinary" in-house counsel for a fortune 500 company variety will be back to staying at the Royal Windsor!!
