An awful experience: Acton Hotel, Kinsale, Ireland A review of Actons Hotel
After reading the glowing recommendations for the Acton Hotel, we booked and paid for a 2-bed smoking room, April 2nd and 3rd, at the Acton in Kinsale. We paid for this several months in advance. Our driver got us there about 6 p.m. after a long day on the road, and we were anticipating a kind welcome and a good meal at their highly recommended restaurant. We are two senior ladies and one of us was limping from a painful heel problem. The clerk informed us that all smoking rooms had been taken and more or less told us to take it or leave it, even though we paid for this long in advance. We were sent up to a 3rd floor room which certainly could not be classified as acceptable in a 3 star hotel. Both beds had broken down mattresses and one bed even had a noticeable dip in the center. The bathroom door was rotten at the bottom and appeared to have been in a flood. The room was depressing. We were also informed that we could not get into the restaurant, although we noticed at least 4 empty tables. The clerk could have cared less that we were unhappy with the entire situation. He advised us to walk about six blocks to some restaurant. It was not possible for one of us to walk that distance; however, we found a hamburger in a place near by. We didn't come to Kinsale to eat hamburger. Complimentary newspapers were available to us at all of the hotels we booked in our 14 day stay in Ireland. Well, the Acton didn't provide that either. This was our one and only bad experience in Ireland. We are not whiners and complainers as we were more than pleased and very happy with all of our other accommodations. I have to say that we did not feel welcome, ached all over from the horrible beds, never got a chance to eat at the famous restaurant and were very happy to get out of there.
