Achingly cool A review of Fresh Hotel

We have visited this hotel twice now. We stayed here last year when it was unhip and known as the Athens Centre hotel. In fact, we had a very pleasant stay and the faded 70s "modernism" was appealing in an odd way. In 2003 the hotel was mid-metamorphosis so we were interested to see the results of the face lift.

Now the Fresh Hotel is a fully fledged "hip" hotel and could take its place amongst some of the most stylish and trendsetting hotels around the globe.

The decor is a dazzlingly bright combination of monochrome formica and leather, bursts of citrus perspex and chic pale wood.

The bedrooms are of average size for an inner city hotel but, refreshingly, they are as attractive and stylish as the public areas. Flat screen TVs, deep pile rugs and a funky wet room with coordinated accessories simply ooze cool!

Some rooms do not have balconies but this is more than compensated for by the stunning roof top terrace. Relax on loungers by the pool (small but inviting) or sip cocktails reclining on the huge sofas whilst taking in the view of sprawling Athens in surprising peace and quiet.

So, is there anything wrong with this hotel? Well, the waiting staff have some way to go before their level of service matches the standard of the decor. However, the reception staff are very friendly. The roof top restaurant has only four tables and the food and drink is not cheap by Greek standards (although the prices are probably no more than a similar hotel in London or Paris). The immediate surrounding area is not particularly salubrious but the hotel is within 15 minutes walking distance of Plaka and Omonia Square.

In short, Fresh Hotel is aptly named as it is something completely different in a city where boutique hotels are few and far between. A carefully designed and exiting hotel.
