Absolutely delightful!!! A review of Absoluut Verhulst
My college age daughter and I spent two nights at this lovely B&B just a 5 minute walk from the medieval center of town. Benno & Frieda were charming, friendly and so helpful and accommodating. Our room overlooked a garden courtyard and the bed and duvet were so comfortable. The heat was regulated by us and the room was tastefully decorated and bright. The bathroom was several steps down en suite and was enormous, modern and bright as well with a walk in shower that could accommodate 4. Together with an incredibly sumptuous and delicious breakfast, this marvelous B&B was just 75 euros per night (cash) including tax and breakfast. Reserve early as there are only 3 rooms and it was full mid-week off-season.
They supplied us with a wonderful map prepared by Benno that was so easy to follow and had wonderful recommendations for snacks, meals, etc. All of their recommendations, without exception, were excellent. The town of Bruge is a gem and not overrun by tourists (this time of the year). In fact, we found the prices to be quite reasonable despite the euro being at an all time high against the dollar. Bruge is a definite 2 night + visit to enjoy it thoroughly. My daughter, who had been studying in London and travelling throughout Europe, was very surprised by how wonderful it was and has recommended it to her friends.
We would recommend Rock Forte for dinner although they have a reasonable prix fixe lunch (just around the corner from the B&B), Cafedraal for dinner, Carpe Diem for lunch (incredible pastries, bread and waffles!). These were just some of the places we tried. Also take the canal rides throughout the town and visit the Minnewater, bell tower, take a brewery tour and do not miss the incredible selection of Belgian brew!! My daughter made it a point to try as many as possible and was most impressed. De Garr is a great place to sample hundreds and is in a small alleyway between the B&B and the Burg. Definitely a must! I highly recommend Rick Steves' guide to Amsterdam, Brussels and Bruge. His recommendations, maps, etc. were very helpful and his musuem tours were excellent.
Bruge is so easy to get to--53 minutes by hourly train from any Brussels station. We came by Eurostar from London and spent one night in Brussels. Bruge is in my top 5 places to visit in all of western Europe.
