a unique experience A review of La Mariposa Spanish School and Eco Hotel
We stayed at La Mariposa as a family (kids are 10 and 14) for 5 weeks to learn Spanish and had an amazing time. The 1 to 1 teaching is very well structured, with 2 hours of grammar and 2 hours of conversation every weekday. We were never bored for a second as every afternoon there was an activity, plus homework, and there was always someone to talk to... including the parrots. Staying at the Mariposa was a bit like being in an ever-changing commune, and the easy access to the kitchen (and kettle!) for cups of tea and bananas was much appreciated. The food was largely vegetarian but with lots of variety (well, apart from rice and beans with most meals). The kitchen staff were very accommodating when the kids were sick, and liquidated every meal for my husband for over a week when he couldn't eat solids (long story). Paulette and the other staff (thank you Gonzlalez) could not have done more for us when my husband had freak surfing accident. Oscar and Santos were also very cheerful and let the kids help feed the many animals. We enjoyed the menagerie of rescued wild animals that Paulette looks after, and the many dogs and cats. Above all we felt we got to know Nicaragua far better than if we'd stayed in a 'regular' hotel, and while the cabin wasn't always plain sailing (think big spiders, early wakeup calls from the parrots, dark jungly paths) we wouldn't have changed a thing!
