A truly beautiful place! A review of The Balsams Grand Resort
My husband and I stayed at the Balsams over this past weekend (August 27-29). It was a very long drive, but when we crested the last hill and saw what looked like a white palace nestled between mountains we actually gasped. It's quite breathtaking!
The hotel is spotless and the majority of the staff was attentive and helpful. The hotel has an old-fashioned atmosphere, with men expected to wear jackets after 6:00 p.m. We loved that, but I can imagine it's not for everyone.
Dinner was sumptuous with multiple courses and a good variety of choices. The food looks beautiful and tastes even better! After leaving the dining room on Sunday we were able to hear an amazing a cappella singing group (The Women of Note) entertaining the guests. They were fabulous and so much fun!
The rooms at The Balsams are very large and so comfortable. Ours looked out over the gardens with a view of the lake beyond. There is no air conditioning, but each room has a fan. I was personally thrilled that there were no tvs in the rooms. I think that they would detract from the experience.
There are facilities available for a wide variety of sports, including golf, tennis, swimming, hiking, and skiing.
The only sour note for us was the clerk at the front desk who handled our check-out on Monday, the 29th. She was unnecessarily rude and dismissive, and left us feeling a little less happy as we pulled away from the hotel.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who likes a little old-fashioned luxury.
