A true getaway A review of Hanalei Colony Resort
We've stayed in several places in Hawaii, but none as special as this.
Probably the most notable thing is the lack of crowds here, and I was really surprised that, for as beautiful and pristine the beaches are, there weren't more people. We stayed for two weeks and most days the local beaches were practically deserted, especially when compared to Maui or Oahu.
The resort is like a conglomeration of bungalows, cozy condo suites with newly refurbished bathrooms and nice kitchens for coffee and breakfast on your own time. We did a lot of cooking with an always stocked outdoor BBQ nearby for grilling the local catch. (Check out the Hanalei Dolphin fish market).
Most every room has a view of the ocean and some are right on the water. The entire place is beach-side, so it's only a few steps to the water regardless of which room you're staying in. Though I should point out that this beach is best suited for sitting on a blanket with a maitai and taking in the view; there are better swimming and snorkeling beachs just a couple of minutes away by car. And let me just say this... the Kauai North Shore beaches are among the most beautiful I've ever seen, anywhere! Breathtaking mountains behind you, fine golden sand that serpentines around lava outcroppings, and beautiful aquamarine water that begs you to jump in. Just great!
This isn't a massive resort with marble fountains, restaurants and a dayspa. But if you're looking for a quiet honeymoon or a fun family vacation, and you want to be immersed in the gorgeous natural surroundings, I'd say you won't be disappointed with this intimate, well-maintained getaway.
