A taste of luxury A review of Hotel Prinsenhof Bruges
Probably the best hotel we have ever stayed in, both in the UK and abroad, and I am very fussy! We had booked the 'jewel in the crown' package for three nights, which included breakfast, a welcoming glass of champagne and tea/coffee on the first day. Due to building work we were upgraded to a superior deluxe room, which was large and comfortable, with every mod con - didn't see any of the other rooms, which may have been smaller. The bed was comfy too, which makes a nice change - I often return from holidays with a bad back due to sagging mattresses!
The hotel is in a side road, quiet and peaceful, but convenient for the centre of Bruges. Thoughtful touches like big fluffy bathrobes and a bowl of sweets in the room added to the feeling of being pampered. When we returned after dinner the bed was turned down, there were chocolates on the pillows and soft music playing! The hotel is small enough to have a real family atmosphere; all the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble - attentive without being intrusive, which is often a difficult balance to achieve. There was a huge variety of food at breakfast to suit every taste, didn't really need lunch!
As regards local amenities - there are a lot of restaurants ranging from traditional Flemish cuisine to Chinese; something to suit everyone, but we thought they were generally on the expensive side. It's worth noting that nearly all the museums and galleries are closed Mondays. We recommend the battlefields tour, which can be booked through the hotel.
