A lovely stay at the cliffs A review of The Cliffs Resort

My husband and I just completed a one week road trip down the southern california coast, and of the three places we stayed (two nights Cambria, two nights Pismo Beach, two nights Santa Barbara), we were the happiest with our stay at the Cliffs. While we enjoyed the sites/activities of Cambria and Santa Barbara better than Pismo, the hotel was what made our stay in Pismo so lovely. I had a series of prompt, polite email exchanges with the general manager before booking, and she was professional and responded to all of our requests (ocean view room, higher floor, facing the ocean and pool versus the combo restaurant/ocean/pool view side of this L-shaped hotel. The hotel lobby has a clean-lined, simple but elegant look with white marble and granite floors and columns, and attractive leather sofas overlooking the terrific view. One of the things we most appreciated about this hotel was that views of the ocean were to be had no matter where you are -- the lobby, your room/lanai, the pool area, the sundecks (where you can enjoy a fun happy hour with complimentary appetizers), and the restaurant. We enjoyed complete, excellent full breakfasts each morning (with made to order omelettes and waffles, yum!), fruit, breakfast meats, breads and all you could want. Having a hearty breakfast versus a continental was much appreciated. The pool area is attractive and well serviced by polite wait staff who take drink/food orders. The pool is heated, but rather small and shallow (at 5 feet at deepest, and given small size, it seemed to be the happiest fit with the kids versus the adults). Hot tub/spa is nice and big. There is a public access walkway down to a great beach, so no complaints about being up on the cliff versus sea level here. We have to say that we LOVED the king-sized, pillow-topped beds (they advertise these beds on their website as modeled after the Westin hotels fancy beds, and they have earned bragging rights. Very comfortable.) I liked the modern, updated linens and room decor -- almost stark, but soothing and interesting colors of pale yellow, and sea greens and blues. The plantation shutter door/windows to the lanai are a wonderful touch. Rooms are also VERY quiet/sound-proof to neighboring rooms, though the orientation of all rooms towards the pool means you will hear the squeals of kids for most of the day, as well as the pleasant sound of the courtyard fountain. We liked this place very much....one observation. We happily used the small gift shop the first day to get a needed pair of flip flops and some candy bars. Sorry to see a sign saying the gift shop is going to make room for more conference space. Bad idea if you ask us -- people appreciate hotel gift shops (and not those new "gift vending machine/shops"....the lady who worked there was personable and the human touch is welcome.) Overall, we'd absolutely stay here again (at least during one of their specials weeks....as with all coastal rooms, this isn't a cheap getaway, though it was worth the money we paid much more than other places we stayed.)
