A Jewel North of Denali A review of Motel Nord Haven
Motel Nord Haven is such a special place--well run and maintained, beautiful Alaskan arwork and photos on all the walls, 2 great community rooms, good collection of Alaskan natural history books for guests, and just a short drive from the busy Denali National Park entrance. The rooms are spacious and very, very clean(and cleaned daily). We were lucky to get a queen with a microwave and fridge, very helpful because food is expensive in the area(we shopped at the huge Carrs supermaket in Anchorage). The motel has the feeling of a fine scandinavian hostel, but with private rooms. The breakfast room w/ fireplace is huge and inviting, as is the deck looking out into the Taiga forest. The staff is friendly and helpful. Highly recommemded by a very picky traveler(but a budget traveler too!) Great for couples and families, as long as kids don't expect video games or a pool. The land of Interior Alaska is the entertainment. The cafe next door, Rose's Diner, is a special place for those who enjoy classic diners. They serve the "Grizzly Burger": 1 lb. ground beef topped with ham steak, egg, and cheese. Your cardiologist's nightmare! Great atmosphere in diner, full of locals and travelers. Right out of "Northern Exposure"! Motel Nord Haven is the place to stay--skip the expensive hotels at park entrance(you must rent a car to travel to Healy).
