A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Sooner Country! A review of The Skirvin Hilton Oklahoma City
This was my first stay at the " newly " renovated Skirvin Hilton located in the heart of downtown OKC. My experience at this beautiful hotel far exceeded any positive reviews that I read about beforehand. It was obvious that Hilton managed to retain the appeal and character of a very old hotel while incorporating modern accents and polished pieces; i.e. chairs, drapings, pictures, and furniture. I will provide my comments via categories as I have found this to be helpful when reading reviews myself.
Rooms: Perhaps because I am Hilton Honors I was provided with some sort of an upgrade. Let's just say I was placed in a two room suite with two flat panel TV's with a sitting area, desk, huge windows with absolutely beautiful silk organza curtains. The bedroom was smaller with an extremely comfortable pillowtop bed and great big pillows. The bathroom was large with marble and travertine and there were two terry cloth bathrobes available for comfort.
Service: The best service that I have encountered in a long time while traveling away on business. Let's just say that I was craving an ice cream sundae at 9PM and contacted Room Service in which they informed me they did not offer sundaes. Within minutes I received a call back in my room stating that they would find some things in the kitchen and make it work. I was greeted ten minutes later with a wonderful ice cream sundae.
Location: This hotel is in a great location to most area attractions. Although I did not have time to visit, I was aware of Bricktown which is a three block radius with shops, restaurants, the minor league ballpark and a mini river walk with water taxi's within close proximity. The hotel also has a very informative concierge who is willing to share menus for the local restaurants and advice.
Food: I cannot speak for the main restaurant for dinner, since my meeting brought me to Mantel's Wine Bar and Grill- overpriced and subpar food. However, I did have several martinis in the Red Piano Lounge where there was a great assortment of flavored martini's and margaritas for the sipping. Complimentary cashews are provided as is a small tapas menu for sharing. They had an acoustic guitarist playing until 8pm at which the piano player took over for the remainder of the evening. I happened to catch breakfast in the main hotel restaurant and found it to be quite varied with options: Eggs Benedict, Granola Pancakes, Oatmeal, Great Omeletts with unique cheeses and meats and of course, all fresh squeezed juice. If you have time, make the coffee in your room, as it is LAVAAZA Brand from Italy and quite delicous.
This hotel is a hidden gem in the heart of Sooner Country! I am sure the price will skyrocket as the demand increases over time.
Enjoy it while you can.
