A Great Escape A review of Hotel Phoenicia
This is a lovely old hotel, and fantastic if you happen to be a WWII buff as the bar is full of excellent drawings and cartoons of all the old RAF 'chaps' who onced packed the place during its heydey when it was the RAF HQ (the hotel that is, not the bar, or maybe?)
Coming over from Tripoli for 48hrs of R&R it was ideal. The little Bistro stayed open late for us and did a great steak and bott of wine for a reasonable price. Next morning brace yourself for another feast at the breakfast buffet with plenty of bacon and eggs and champagne for the hardy. There is also an excellent hairdressers upstairs run by the delightfully eccentric Charles. He found a taxi for me through into St Julians for a third of the price I paid coming back. Watch out for the taxi drivers the maltese £ is stronger than the UK £ and its easy to get ripped.
The hotel has a small pool which is accessed via a nice walk through the mature gardens and is a good place to have lunch. From the pool there's a view over Valletta below; not missing much there, Valletta is congested and smoggy.
The only thing I would say about the hotel is that the rooms are tiny, ie 2 twin beds, a tv and a suitcase and it was crammed! However, it is a charming old hotel conveniently located for the airport and for town (and the cashpoint, for those of us from Libya who need an ATM and dose of civilisation).
