5 Star Bathroom, 4 Star hotel A review of Hotel Ambassador-Zlata Husa
The Ambassador Hotel is in an excellent location right on Wenceslas Square with all the big name shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. in the immediate vicinity. A pleasant five minute walk takes you through quaint cobbled streets into Old Town Square, and about 10 mins walk to Karlov Bridge. Our visit (mid December 04) coincided with the fabulous Prague Christmas markets, some of them only a few steps away. We all felt safe even though we had read about watching out for pick pockets etc
It's five star status is perhaps ambitious by international standards, but certainly I would rate it a very good four star. The reception area is welcoming, fitted out in marble, trimmed with brass, enormous chandeliers and ornate plasterwork. Two small lifts serve the six upper floors.
Rooms were pleasantly furnished, and spotlessly clean. They appeared to have under floor heating, as well as radiators. Even though it was minus 5 outside, they were a little on the warm side especially with the duck down duvets. Rooms also had a free, easy to use room safe, illuminated wardrobe, TV and mini bar. Beds were a bit lumpy, frames creaked and although adequate, could do with being renewed. The bathroom was the 5 star bit, grey/white marble and chrome, complete with jacuzzi bath, quality toiletries and luxurious towels and bathrobes.
The breakfast buffet was good, but not comprehensive enough for a 5 star. Cereals were limited to the Czech brands, (no kelloggs here!). However there was a plentiful selection of cold meats, cheese, bread rolls, yoghurt, bacon, sausage, scrambled egg etc. You could have omelette or crepes made fresh at the buffet.
Staff at reception were very helpful in organising tours and exchanging money. We were in a mixed group and everyone found the hotel to be excellent. We all felt we had chosen well, and can't wait to return!
