A very slow drive to Hoi An, our driver had borrowed his bosses mini van and had clearly been instructed to drive like a snail or was it a tortoise - any way it certainly wasn't a hare!! drove the Cloud Pass road - no lorries! Just tourists and a few motorbikes, We had a walk around at the top, a few broken down buildings left by the French. Into Danang and to the sculpture museum our guide was obsessed with showing us the lingar and jonny pieces not sure we were as bothered ;-) Over the past...

(If you haven't figured it out yet, Hue is pronounced 'hway" in Vietnamese)
We had previously arranged private transportation from Hue to Hoi An through a woman named Ha, a travel agent based in Danang. Our driver spoke no English, and since we had only learned how to say hello and thank you in Vietnamese (which we got backwards more often than not), there wasn't much in the way of conversation during the several-hour drive. Along the way we stopped briefly...
Sept 7 Hoi An:
Got up after a restless night attempting to sleep on the hardest mattress in existence. This resort is located on a little island across the bridge from Hoi An old town. We chose to stay here because of our guidebook's recommendation, but the reality seemed a little hyped. The room, although filled with ornate, mother-of-pearl-inlaid wood furniture, was a little long in the tooth and probably could use a renovation. There was a leak in the roof, but with the kind...

Wake up in Hue and we both think; phooey! We used the Internet in the hotel to our best advantage and stopped with just enough time to visit the citys most famous feature; an ancient citadel. to be perfectly frank, we have"totally sucked at being National Geographic tourists on this trip. We got pagoda'd out far faster than it has taken church-fatigue to set in on our trips to Europe. We don't have a clear reason for this, but it might be that the streets are filled with ancient pagoda-y stuf...
Hoi An, Vietnam steve_julieMoved to the Hoi An Resort today so Hels can have a good rest and let tablets work. The lovely staff from our hotel agreed to move our bags and we set off to walk to the resort through some great streets of Vietnamese houses and shacks. Wherever you go people smile and say hello. After the lad from the hotel had taken both of our backpacks on the back of his motorbike, at the same time, he returned to collect Helen to save her walking.......I think he fancied a cuddle from a Western woman bec...
Hoi An, Hoi An, Vietnam tony-helenOur daughter Clare telephoned us during the early morning to tell us that our friend Mel (Melanie) had died at her home after a very long and hard struggle against cancer. Today as we sit in a wonderful place in the world Helen and myself held hands and appreciated just how fortunate we were. We feel so sad for our mate Mac and Ben and Jodie all of whom will miss their mum terribly. We hope that we will be able to lay some flowers over here in Vietnam at the time of Mels funeral. We will not ...

-Took another overnight train to Hoi An, where I am now spending myself into the red....this is the shopping capitol and the place to get tailor-made everything! I have had the following made:
2 pairs of shorts, 1 maxi dress, a reproduction of my favorite coat, 1 silk dress, a pair of leather boots, and a pair of leather sandals--->ALL FOR LESS THAN $190!! My budget was $150, so I did go a bit over (couldn't say no ...
