Going to Hoi An

We left Ha Long Bay at about 9 this morning, I could have stayed longer! And went back to Hanoi, not sure why we did it this way round? So we spent most of the morning back on the bus. My thoughts were with you today, Bron, hope it wasn't too bad and that you did stop crying when you got to work! We stopped at a Ceramics factory to use the happy house and I bought the cutest little tea-set for Susan Lee. Back in Hanoi we could do some shopping and I ventured off on my own to look for a memory...

Still in Hoi An

What a lovely day we had! It seems this trip is getting better by the day! We are really a nice bunch of women, lots of laughs and lots and lots of shopping - poor Dick! We started off today by going on a walking tour through the old part of Hoi An. It was good as they do not allow any motor driven vehicles through the city which means you can walk about without worrying about the traffic too much. We went to the silk shop, I somehow could never work out how the cocoons we have from our silk ...

Danang/Hoi An

We left Hue early in the morning and headed south along the coast to Danag and Hoi An. This region of Vietnam was inhabited by the Champa people starting in about the 6th Century AD (and are now one of the ethnic minorities), so there are a lot of ruins and statues here. Lots of Hindu and Buddhist influence. Very exotic and beautiful. On the way to Danang, we went through a mountin pass that was really pretty and stopped at a Champa Art museum. It was all outdoor and very interesting. Also st...

Last Day in Hoi An

We spent our last day in Hoi An wisely. We had a nice breakfast then walked the 5km into the old town. It was so hot at 9am! We were sweaty and gross by the time we got to town. We stopped to have a cold drink in the shade then went to a tailor recommended by our guide (this town is FULL of them, so it would have been hard to pick one.) I picked out a coat and some fabric and got measured. Their "catalogs" are notebooks of magazine pages. Apparently they only have to look at something and the...

Hoi An

Rain, Rain and more rain, have seen more rain in the last 24 hours than Adelaide has seen in 5 years. Seeing the sun is a rare thing indeed. Managed to get some shopping in on Monday but has rained all day (Tuesday/Wednesday). So have just loafed around the resort. Well the rain finally let up on Thursday and we were able to do some more exploring (and lazing). The hotel has a shuttle bus that runs into town regularly and we had several trips. There are a huge array of Restaurants and cafes a...

First day in Hoi An

Hoi An: Wed 15th July

I am writing this entry from our bungalow located right on the sand of Cua Dai beach with spectacular views out over the South China Sea. It is about 4pm and less humid and hot here than Hue. We had a late lunch and now I am back lying on the bed with my laptop and looking out the window towards the gentle surf where Mark and Tom are playing football. There are some beautiful limestone island on the horizon out past where the boys are swimming. This is one magic v...

First full day in Hoi An

Thursday 16th July

The weather on our first full day in Hoi An was clear and warm but a little overcast giving us some thankfull relief from the extreme heat. Mark and I headed off for a walk along the beach before breakfast. We planned to head in to the Old Town to do the walking tour by way of the 2pm shuttle so we spent the morning relaxing on the beach. Mark and Tom played a bit of footy in the water and we all had a laugh trying to navigate what can only be described as a large, c...

Cooking Class Day

Friday 17th July

Cooking class this morning. An early start: 8.30 - 1pm. Was great. More later. Check out the photos.

The Red Bridge Cooking Class and tour was on our agenda this morning. This started with a walk through the local wet markets where our guide/chef, Phi, pointed out some of the more interesting food items. From the markets we walked back along the river and boarded a boat. We travelled east towards the coast for about 20 minutes, taking in all of the local sights,...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort And Spa

A spectacular town and a spectacular resort

from constitutiontravel
The town of Hoi An was recommended to us by our travel agency over the other Vietnamese coastal areas. They were absolutely correct. The Victoria Hoi An was a beautiful resort and certainly more suited to travel and tourism than the Ana Madera. We stayed in a Japanese style beachfront suite which was spacious and lovely. Our front patio and fencing allowed privacy while the back porch had direct beach access and an amazing view. The hotel pool and spa were lovely and the resort elephant is a great touch! The bartenders and staff were also very helpful. The only two drawbacks to this hotel were the frequency of shuttles to town (not bad, you just had to plan on their schedule) and the surcharge for credit card payments. We didn't eat at the hotel, but the food was (expectedly) more expensive than the local restaurants. I'd return to both Hoi An and this resort in an instant!

Best Ever in Hoi An

from worldtrek
The Victoria Hoi An Resort is right on the beach. The staff are friendly and the hotel has lots of character - in colonial setting. The resident elephant "Darling" is a real darling, and you can ride for US$30 or feed her a bunch of bananas (her favourite) for 10,000 Vietnamese dongs. There are lots of activities, such as massage - Swedish, Thai, Asian, or the Victoria (which is a combination of everything); or if you are sporty - tennis, water sports, beach volley ball; or merely lazing on the private beach. The kids have a kids club which is from 9 am to 9 pm - free! Vietnamese coffee (thick and sweet) at the pool side bar is the best coffee in Vietnam. Check out the Hotel website for any special deals - we did, and we had a fantastic saving, with free upgrade to deluxe room. There is a fresh fruit basket in the room on arrival, and lots more fresh fruit at breakfast... and pho. If you go to Hoi An, you must stay at the Victoria.

Nice beds, great food, wonderful location

from DarthAnonymous
My fiancee (now my wife!) and I relaxed at Victoria Hoi An for two nights after two exhausting weeks of work in Hanoi (September 2003). We enjoyed our stay here so much that I am compelled to offer some reviews in contrast to some of the negative ones listed here.

We stayed in two separate rooms so perhaps this review should count as two?

Both rooms had beds that were totally comfortable to both of us. We normally sleep on extra firm mattresses anyway so maybe if you're not used to extra firm, you might find these too hard. We were also tired silly by our two weeks' work in Hanoi so maybe we were conditioned to sleep through anything too... However, in a nutshell, we slept fine and have no complaints about the beds. Yes. They are "false" kings...two twins strapped together. Do note that these are more like boards with thin mattresses on them, not the thick multi-inch cushy types typical in the US. If you jumped on it, it would probably collapse.

In our states of exhaustion, my fiancee found the spa services to be wonderful.

Both rooms' air conditioning units worked fine. I'm sorry to hear that another review had intolerable mildewy smells.

September 2003 was such a bargain. The place was trying to recover from the SARS scare so we got two nights for the price of one. US$90 for two nights. Except for a handful of other tourists, we had paradise to ourselves. Perhaps this jades our view too that it was an incredible deal. We were also there for the weekend of the Harvest Moon Festival...very charming with the old Chinese town [yes Hoi An has Chinese roots] lit up with lanterns, children running around with lanterns, lion dances, etc.

I especially enjoyed the food at Victoria Hoi An. Unlike most other Vietnamese restaurants, it didn't cause head-splitting headaches with msg for me. I also enjoyed the piles of fresh fruit (pineapple, dragon fruit, bananas, rambutan, asian pears, etc) that were left in our rooms after each housekeeping. My fiancee thought the poolside bar's lemonade (nuoc chang) was the best lemonade she's ever had in the world.

We never requested much housekeeping service if any so am sorry to hear of other reviews of inadequate housekeeping service. Checking in seemed kind of slow and disorderly but the wait did not phase us. If you can wait a half hour or an hour, lounging around in a tropical paradise, it's relaxing, not a problem.

Yes. Central Hoi An is a bit of a walk down the road. We found Victoria Hoi An's shuttle to be adequate.

Yes. Darling, the elephant, is charming. They charge way too much to ride it. Feeding her is fun and more reasonable.

There were an awful lot of little frogs all over the paths at night. That made evening strolls a bit tricky but memorable.

The beach was immaculate and spoiling. After Vietnam's beaches, Hawaii's seem like dumps.

We'd stay here again no problem, even just to get some more nuoc chang.

Some Good and Bad Things

from JessicaBN
My husband and I stayed here in a Seafront Villa, it was a very nice room, with a good bathroom and great sea views. Housekeeping in this hotel are worse than useless, we asked for our sheets to be changed on several occaisions and they were not......

The breakfast is OK, however, the evening meal is not worth the price they charge and the quality was terrible.

The pool is lovely and the bars too, the Elephant (Darling) really made my stay here. The gym is very small and needs upgrading.

We had a great time there, this is the best hotel in Hoi An, but it could try a little harder.

A Vietnam Respite

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a lovely surprise! A canopy bed...large marble bathroom...dark spare furniture. Has an Aman Hotel look with non-Aman prices. Forget the hard beds...that's Vietnam. The food was the best I had in the country...Great, professional staff in the hotel...it is owned by a Frenchman so...good wine selection.

The beach is beautiful wide and white. Great cushioned lounge chairs under thatched huts. Darling, the elephant is a great addition to the ambience. Feed her...its great fun!

lLft one night to see the town....just more junk shops. Use this as your mid-trip rest up. You'll love it

I'm conflicted

from Pete078
We stayed at the Victoria in mid-January 2005. I am conflicted because this resort has many excellent qualities - a pleasant and accommodating staff, great facilities, terrific beach. The main problem was that our two rooms had a terrible mildew odor that didn't go away even with the AC on. The odor was almost toxic and we cut our stay from 3 nights to 2 because of that.

Great resort

from clementine05
We stayed at the Victoria for two nights in Dec 2004. It is definitely the fanciest hotel in Hoi An (with prices to match). The beach-side setting is lovely and very peaceful, and the rooms are tastefully decorated. The staff is friendly and helpful. The only (minor) downside is that the hotel is too far from town to walk, and there are no taxis. They do offer a free shuttle into town (a few times per day) or you could pay $3/person for the shuttle whenever you'd like (not much for us, but tacky on their part). All of that being said, we had a great time there and would definitely recommend it.

Good Staff, Hard Beds

from jackiemUK
I think the thing that really stands out is the quality of the beds. They are very hard and a good night's sleep is almost impossible. Overall I would rate the rest of the facilities as very good. The staff were all very helpfal, spoke reasonable engl;ish and the service, especially in the bar, was excellent and attentive. The food in the main restuarant was very good and again the staff all seemed very attentive tro our needs. The location is very good - we stayed in a Riverview room which is in a block on the road - think the ocean view would have been better having walked around the hotel.

Gorgeous hotel , gorgeous setting, wonderful people

from A TripAdvisor Member
My new husband and I just had 7 wonderful days for our honeymoon at Victoria Hoi An resort. Our Delux waterview room was lovely (another review mentioned hard beds - true , but we found that everywhere in Vietnam). The staff were really friendly and would do all they could for us. The pet elephant 'Darling' wanders around the resort and is a constant source if entertainment. We were in the resort over christmas and enjoyed the most exquisite banquet and wonderful local dancers and Santa arriving on Darling before hand. Arriving back in our room christmas night was a lovely silk lantern wrapped up for us to take home. A perfect christmas celebration ! Every evening when we got in there was a lovely scroll with a local fable to read before bed. ( A lovely touch). The beach is also gorgeous by the way..... A perfect holiday ! I could go on and on but must get back to work.... I wish I could get back to Hoi An !!!

Not that fantastic

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed 3 nights at Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort last January 2004. My husband and I took a superior river view room, while we offered to my mother-in-law a deluxe beach front room. Although we found the hotel a pleasant place to stay, rooms' decoration very nice and pleasant, we discovered that beds are not that comfortable! The mattresses were quite hard and we did not sleep well although we were in a beautiful hotel! Furthermore it was a 'false' king size bed since it was in fact two beds put side by side.

We also found the staff not that professionnal, although we're not that demanding. First at the bar, we once wanted to have lunch by the swimming pool and asked for an umbrella and waited patiently and finally discovered that the staff were not able to handle all requests and forgot us. Most of the staff could hardly understand and speak English and it was difficult to get what we requested (and if yes, it took time...). Finally when checking out, we discovered a lot of errors on the bill...
