Vang Vieng Laos

Ok, so we have been in a beautiful town called Vang Vieng in Laos for about a week with Arron and Tabby and what a week it has been. Vang Vieng is famous for "Tubing" sitting in a rubber ring sailing down the Nam river for two hours but every corner theres a bar with lao kids throwing you ropes to get you in... i'll come back to tubing later. After the four hour bus trip from Vientiane on the "VIP" bus (no seats or air con just a bus) we arrived around 1400hrs. We had all our gear with us and...

Relaxing in Vang Vieng

We were picked up the next morning at our hotel by a driver who took us to the Luang Prabang bus station where we board a minibus to Vang Vieng. I should have packed some extra food… the bus ride went for approximately 7 hours. We drove through dense jungle and High Mountain passes. It was breathtaking. The views of the green valley were spectacular.

On arrival at the Vang Vieng bus station, we made our way to our hotel which was beautifully located on the banks of the river. We...

Party town

... huge impact that this had had on this small town beside a beautiful river. It was Faliraki-Blackpool in Laos. There were Aussie bars and people drunk and having a complete disregard for any local culture. And why do they comer here? .... for the beer for sure but also because the slow wide river is perfect for lazy 'tubing' and they all float down the river in inner-tubes stopping at village ...

Tubing: Day 2... Halloween Style!

As today was Halloween, it was of course imperative to purchase silly outfits. After breakfast, a delightful Full English at the Friends cafe, Mark and I had a wander round the local shops looking for amusing items of attire. We decided on pink as a theme; I bought some pink Rayban Wayfarers, a pink headband and some quite frankly indecently short pink board shorts which hands-down won the title of the shortest item I have ever worn in public! Mark went for similar attire also ...

Tubing: Day 1

In the morning me, Mark and Susan headed into town on a more scenic route than we had the previous day, which involved crossing a ramshackle bridge over a small stream, following a path through some fields with a beautiful view of the mountains in the distance, then walking north along the west bank of the river until finally crossing another bridge over the river and into the north-west end of town. We had breakfast at a little cafe where they show constant ...

Off to Vang Vieng

In the morning, me, Mark and Susan had a quick breakfast, packed up, then were driven away in the the hostel's tuk-tuk. It was raining gently as we sped through the town, and soon we arrived at the bus station. After a five minute wait, our minibus arrived and we handed our backpacks to the driver, who had jumped on the roof and was loading bags onto the roof rack. We all then piled inside the vehicle, and quickly realised that it was going to be a rather ...

Land of the Happy Shakes

Having regained a bit of my former strength, I decided that it was once again time to move on. Next destination - Vang Vieng, a small town renowned for attracting backpackers who drink, do drugs, and watch “Friends” reruns at the numerous TV bars lining the main street. No, I hadn’t particularly turned to drink or drugs, or TV for that matter, but was attracted by the stunning limestone mountains surrounding the town.

In addition to being “jammed like ...

'Ridin Along on a Push Bike, un' which was crap.

... if any viewer has rated it or left a comment, I noticed an article about a guy who traveled over from Hanoi, and was scammed by the Vietnamese when purchasing his Laos visa. It left him really enraged. I was left chuckling. It may have been more insightful if he'd looked into the reasons why Vietnamese are the worst scammers in these parts.
Returning to the Thavisouk, I actually had a shower - believe it or ...
