Lush & beautiful - a real gem!

... Dhamma books, some written on Ola leaves. The Pansiya Panas Jathakaya has 1,055 leaves (containing Five Hundred and Fifty Jathaka stories), under glass. As the temple closed at 8pm, I left the complex and walked back along part of the lake. What a funny day in such an outstanding setting! Buddha's Tooth and an Elephant Orphanage

... They used sharp metal gaffs to stick the elephants to make them obey. I'm still not sure how I feel about this... Twice a day the elephants are led down to a river where they can splash around and cool off. I could tell this was their favorite part of their day! A couple of the elephants had to be chained to rocks in the river because a couple females were in heat. Do not get in the way of a horny elephant!

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

... working front leg are bent, but nevertheless it was remarkable to see such a huge animal cope with such a seemingly restrictive disability. Understandably, Homily had a bit of a temper and was clearly frustrated with her circumstances but still managed to follow the herd down to the river to bathe twice a day, whilst trumpeting in defiance at the irritating staff who were always hurrying her along. It was fantastic watching the elephants ...

... busy, probably due to the excellent publicity on the web. It is owned by a German woman and now charges Rs2500 which is lower only than the Inn next door whose menu was very limited and twice the price of places in town; the going rate for a beer is about Rs150; they charge 300. We chose Kandy Resort Inn just below the Sharon Inn which is a third of the price and owned by a Sri Lankan; the young lad running it even had a Scots name - Rennie. Perhaps because it was the last ...

Going in-land with a van

... the journey. So many that at one stage when Manjula suggested we visit another temple, a little ways off our route, I told him if I never set foot in another temple I would be happy.. with a hastily added "No offense" which may have been too late for offense to have been taken. This was during the part of the journey where I became narky and frustrated . By the fourth and fifth days I was so fed up with driving to the next beauty spot, or ...

Ancient cities, elephants & sneaking into temples

... for this temple and music, drumming and screams of religious ecstasy can be heard from its high walls all day. It is so famous those crazy tamil tigers decided to pull atruck up next to the temple a few years ago and blow it up - sorta like they do in Iraq. Some of the temple was blown up, it has since been rebuilt and no it looks like a fortress with armed gurads everywhere, checkpoints and heaps of metal detectors. So of course we had to get in ...

Off to Visit the Veddas of Sri Lanka in 24 Hours

... shadows on the tightly pressed, red soil. Suddenly I see something directly in front of me on the ground. It is a delicate, yellow lizard darting in between the pools of sun light. I have just read about lizards and, looking up, the words seem to have materialise before my eyes. Magical! My personal circle has been completed. It is time to leave. At parting I shake everybody’s two hands at the same time, in the style of the Weddas. It is a farewell that makes me feel joyous and immensly sad at the same time.

From the beach to the hills via a brothel

... had arrived that morning from London and as good old boys go, were not ones to knock back a few beers and a laugh. Darren's a big bloke, a gentle giant, but that doesn't stop him from diving and taking on any challenge we've thrown at him. Lee on the other hand is a small bloke, stocky and has a great sense of humour. Anyway, We got talking on the first night we met and it just so happened that they would be in Kerala, India at the same time that I'm going to be there, to do a backwater ...
