Shopping Overload!

We travelled to Hoi An via a flight to Da Nang. Hoi An is known for all of its tailors and shoe makers, and people flock here to get custom fit wardrobes. I don't really have much to write about this place because all we did was shop! Aunt Charlene got five work outfits custom fit for her and we both got a couple pair of shoes, I also got a dress which I am excited about but I wont be able to wear it until I get back because I mailed it home :( Other than the crazy times running around trying...

Danang, Hoi An and craving chocolate!

An early morning wake up call and we're beginning to feel like zipper people. We haven't stayed more than two nights at any one place so we must zip-unzip-zip-unzip-zip-unzip suitcases for various reasons. Actually just one reason... I over-organized my suitcase. Inside are several smaller 'themed' bags and I can't remember what is what. Today, all those themed bags are gone and just one themed bag remains - the medicine bag. I don't want the Pepto-Bismo reminding me of the penalties for curi...

Hoi An - soooo cheap!

No wake up calls - no alarm clocks - no beep-beep-beep-beep! We skip the city tour and sleep in! Need I say more! We decide to take the twenty-minute stroll in to Hoi An. The tour has given us 'bus butt' and we need to walk off all the breakfast buffets and group dinners organized by our tour. It won't be easy - getting rid of the 'bus-butt' that is. There are lots of roosters and stray dogs. Neither are scared off by us nor do they wonder in to the streets. This discipline makes you wonder i...

... br>
Anyway, there was an animated discussion between them and the tailor as they attempted to identify a scapegoat. Mark had made it very clear that the stripes needed to be vertical, and they knew this. Young Thao blamed herself and both she and her mother Nghe were falling over themselves to apologise. The Vietnamese word for “sorry” is “xin loi”, and the next time Mark came in, Nghe greeted him with open arms, saying “very xin loi”. Nghe said she ...

... of hooting my horn I eventually got back to the hotel before Nathan. I also witnessed an almost horrendous crash which somehow narrowly avoided any real damage with two bikes in front of me. But being white and being the only one around and without the language I reckoned it would be all to easy to get mixed up when all I was doing was driving behind so seeing no one was hurt I just overtook and skedaddled out of there. Didn’t really fancy getting mixed up in all that.
The ...

You go back the next day and voila! Your garment is ready... You have a ...

... collection of six already. Some shops had lantern making on display. The ladies making the lanterns were strategically placed at the front of the store to entice curious passersby to part with their dong (Vietnamese currency). Behind them was a wall of brilliant lanterns in different colours, sizes and shapes. The bamboo skeletons for the lanterns were premade and bent into various shapes. The ladies’ work was to cover them with fancy fabric ...

Everything is made to measure, and they have a no-like, no-pay policy, with no deposit, so you can't lose. But everything fitted us really well and we were very pleased. Its all made on the premises overnight.
