Historical Traveler Reviews Toby's Resort Montego Bay

Had a WONDERFUL time at Toby's

      from

My best friend and I stayed at Toby's from March 29-April 2. It was during the week so it wasn't crowded at all. Our room was very clean and cozy...we were worried about seeing huge roaches but saw NONE throughout our whole trip. Everything worked fine....the cable, A/C, shower... The hotel itself was five minutes from the airport. That was great for us because we didn't want to spend all day sitting on a bus just to get to our room. Toby's had two swimming pools with a bar on deck for one of them. Carmen was our bartender and she makes the best banana daquiri I have ever had....please try one. The hotel also has a restaurant which makes very good food. The people at the frontdesk were very helpful and nice to us. Toby's is located at the beginning of the 'Hip Strip' so it wasn't noisy at all. It only took a few minutes to travel to the stores/shops. No one hounded us to come into their shop and if they did it was never overbearing....just say 'No thanks' and keep it moving. We didn't go on any tours, just went to the beach and ate out everyday. Doctor's cave was where we went and it is absolutely beautiful. The sun shined every day, the air was refreshing and the sky was a gorgeous shade of blue. We went snorkeling for the first time and we stayed in the water for hours. But don't worry, if you can't swim, the beach provides snorkel gear and life jackets. I recommend this for everyone...I am terrified of deep water and if I can do it, so can you guys. The water was so clear, it was unbelieveable...just make sure you put on sunscreen because my friend got sunburned and she was in pain for the remainder of the trip...but we still enjoyed ourselves and we're gonna do it again. Having said that, I definitely recommend staying at Toby's, walking along the hip-strip and just relaxing on Doctor's Cave Beach....we had a wonderful time.

If you are looking for the "real" Jamaica, Toby's is the place to stay.

      from

We wanted to be able to walk into town and talk to the locals, and Tobys was the place for this. There is a small beautiful beach right around the corner, and it is a just a short walk to Marguaritaville and other nice restaurants (Marguerite's is VERY good) and about a mile into the city of Montego Bay. The food at Toby's was very good (and they make a really good pina colada!) If you are looking for a clean, friendly inexpensive place to stay, this is the place.

      I would stay here again!!!

      from

I stayed at Toby's Resort from 08-APR-04, until 18-APR-04 and although it wasn't a four star hotel, it was well worth the money-clean rooms and very safe. The staff was friendly and very helpful with information on where to eat and where to go out. Everyone staying there at the time was really cool and many of us hooked up for dinner and drinks when we weren't playing volleyball in the pool. It was the first place I have stayed at where the staff let us play in the pool until the wee hours and they kept the pool bar open until the patrons had their fill. Don't get me wrong, it was a very relaxing and lazy locale to enjoy the sun, but not a wild place. There were families with children there too.

The location was ideal too. It is located at the end of the "Hip Strip" where it was quiet, but definitely close to all that MoBay has to offer. Everything is within walking distance and the streets-although they may not look it-are quite safe with policemen and women patrolling frequently.

When you get there, ask for Brandon, one of the owners, and tell him Antonio says, "hi." He can be seen mingling with the guests by the pool when he isn't involved with his managerial duties.

      Great value in MoBay

      from

We were pleasantly surprised by Toby's Resort. Although right on the corner of the main drag and only a mile or so from the end of the airport runway, the hotel is a quiet oasis. Hotel is well looked after, though not as spotlessly clean as some might want. Staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant serves an excellent breakfast and an OK dinner. We rented a car and drove along the coast, into the town and to the interior. I feel sorry for guests in the "All inclusives" who never meet real Jamaicans and are told that it is "too dangerous" to go outside their resorts.

Toby's Resort - Family Owned and Friendly

      from

I just came back from a 4 day trip to Montego Bay with my teenage daughter. We considered staying in one of the all-inclusive resorts there but finally decided to try one of the smaller hotels where we would be closer to the town. Our first evening there, we regretted this decision as Toby's Resort appeared to be almost deserted except for us and the staff. On the other hand, it was very peaceful and quiet. But by the next day we started noticing other guests and came to feel very much at home. This is not a 4 or 5 star hotel - so don't go with those expectations. There are not many frills here, no free toiletries or built-in hairdryers, for example. On the other hand, the rooms were clean, quiet, and pleasant. The staff was very friendly, and the restaurant was excellent. We hired the driver at the hotel, Paul, to take us for a couple of day trips and had a wonderful time each day. My only reservation centers more around the town of Montego Bay than around the hotel itself. Toby's Resort is well placed, right at the east end of the Hip Strip, and so is quiet but within walking distance of everything. Unfortunately, almost all the beaches on the Strip are walled off by larger hotels and as patrons of Toby's Resort, you have to go to one of the public ones. Luckily, there are two public beaches quite close by, within about 10 minutes walking distance. We went to Doctor's Cave Beach and it was great, though expensive.

      Peaceful but centrally located

      from

We stayed at Toby's Inn for the recently held Jazz Festival in january 2004. At first I had to request a change of room. I did not like room #2. However I later got #65 which was much better and more spacious.

Ackee and saltfish was great for breakfast and I had it everyday. I sat at the same spot in the restaurant looking at the small pond and the bridge. Close to main shopping area but you are not disturbed by traffic sounds. The staff was friendly and overall my family and I enjoyed our stay.

      A GREAT stay!

      from

Toby's Resort is a quaint, small hotel with verycomfortable rooms at a reasonable rate. The hotel is private yet conveniently located close to the beach, 'hip strip' and the airport. The grounds are well-kept, and everyone was so friendly, courteous and accommodating. I felt like I was among family. Gonzos restaurant is also on the grounds and the food is fabulous, the menu contains a variety of Jamaican and American dishes.

If you want to enjoy 'the mix and the flavor' of beautiful Jamaica then forego the expensive all-inclusives, stay at Toby's Resort and spend your money buying from the islanders and enjoying their home. You won't regret it.

      Clean rooms, friendly staff,

      from

I have been to Mo bay several times and have stayed at several of the Mo bay resorts (including some of the larger ones). Just recently however, my wife and I stayed at Toby Inn for our honeymoon and while it isn't the largest or fanciest resort on the Montego Bay strip, it is certainly my favorite. The rooms are comfortable, with patios overlooking a large garden, the location is within walking distance of everything you'd want to see in Mo bay but far enough away to get away from much of the hustle and bustle. Best of all is the staff who are about as friendly as I have ever experienced. I highly recommend it.

      Friendly....

      from

Found Toby's in August 2002 when needing a place to spend the night before leaving for home. Enjoyed the atmosphere and stayed on a return trip in October 2002. And again in February 2003...now we are headed back there this month to again relax and enjoy the friends we've made.

I would recommend this resort for those who like more laid-back, resonably priced and friendly vacation.

      Refresh and revive beyond.

      from

As you tread within the boundaries of Toby's Resort, you know you are

treated as though you are family. The apartments had a fresh feeling

every day, as they were serviced as though it was the home of the

staff. Food was fresh, well cooked, polite staff, even if you came too

early or too late. The reception staff assisted with excellent accurate

support, as I was there on business.

It is a fantastic place for the family or the individual, as the delightful atmosphere caters for everyone. It was such a relaxing place, that I almost forgot to visit the rest of the island. Excellent location to reach all your needs without being in the middle of them, a very unique place and experience.

... stop us enjoing MoBay. No! One no is all it took and they moved on, at night it is probably very different, but during the day it felt nice enough and was great to get away from the sanitised air of the cruise ship.
Traffic back was horrid, as was dock. Stupid bus just to get to dock from port, and other line had it worse as they had to tender! Carnival was directly at the dock with no messing ...

We've gotten about as laid back as you can get !

Haven't done a great deal since last time. Our days consist of waking up, having an all you can eat breakfast, feeling crook from eating too much, then lazing around the pool while the boys go up and down the slides. You try and hold off from drinking for as long as you can, but the staff keep asking if you want something from the bar. And they are so damn friendly and nice it's near impossible to say No. There is no responsible drinking laws here! We ...

... to look, so you go in and have a look at more wood carvings to keep them happy. You then say sorry, not really interested and they usually reply 'that's cool mon'. As long as you have a look in their shop, that's enough to keep them happy. A bloke came up to D'Lene and had a $5 Australian note he wanted to change to US$. Poor bloke has probably been waiting ages for some Aussies to pass through the markets.

      Went to Jimmy ...

... boys went up and down the slides. Whenever you want a drink you just go the bar (there's even a swim-up bar) and order whatever you want. It's great not having to worry about money or the cost of everything for a change. If you're hungry you can order from the snack menu. The boys loved getting their mocktails, just got to remember not mix them up with our drinks! We've been lucky with the weather as we are in the middle of hurricane season and so far it's sunny ...

... have a server come and take your drink order you will, most of the time, be disappointed. For some reason, there is a dearth of wait staff. That’s money not earned by Carnival. I don’t get that.

Frankly, the best entertainment is to sit at the bar or in one of the dining spots and simply listen to the conversations held by your neighbors. When you can understand what they are saying through often-thick accents, their back-and-forth is often hilarious. Also, scary.
